Home Working the soil

Working your soil in wine/tree growing or market gardening

Tillage is becoming more and more popular in wine growing, both to eliminate weeds and to improve soil structure. A good alternative to chemical weed killers.

Let's find out what's to gain!

  • Control weeds between rows
  • Destroy temporary grass cover
  • Improve the soil’s structure (porosity, aeration…)
  • Loosen the soil
  • Supply soil enriching agents
  • Limit vine vigour (by destroying shallow roots)
  • Slow down evaporation

It is important to choose your tillage tool based on the tractor, soil type and conditions, weather, work objectives and grass.

At KUHN,
two types of tools are available to carry out tillage work between rows in vineyards or orchards or to prepare the soil for market gardening:

EL power tillers

Find out more

EL 22 to 92 power tillers, specialists through their size, shape and specificities

With a working width ranging from 1.26 to 2.30 m, KUHN power tillers for specific crops excel in creating the seedbed in all conditions. Thanks to their very compact design, you will be able to work in between narrow rows. While the EL 43 power tiller has an exceptionally low profile for safely passing through the orchards under branches, the EL 62, EL 82 and EL 92 models feature a small working width/overall width ratio. Using this tool for working the soil allows finely shredding residues before mixing them to the ground. Shredding pruning wood, incorporating mulch and plant cover into the soil, or mixing in a plant cover established in winter are easy to achieve.

HRB power harrows

HRB 122 – 152 – 182 – 202 power harrows, specialist in small width tillage

This range of power harrows offers a working width ranging from 1.20 to 2.10 m requiring power of up to 80 hp. These machines are used primarily for mechanical weeding between rows, incorporating plant cover into the soil and improving the soil structure.
